CHARGE FILED IN 1974 MECKLENBURG SLAYING

Seventeen years after Horace Linwood Liles was shot to death, police have charged a Kenbridge man with his death.

Melvin Bennett Jr., 35, has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony in the slaying, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Lawrence Clary said.

Liles, 24, was shot to death on Sept. 29, 1974, at the G&R Texaco station on U.S. 1 near South Hill.

The sheriff said a lead surfaced that led police to Bennett, but he declined to say what it was. - Associated Press
