TECH CAN HELP INDENTIFY ROCK MASS

Q: I've discovered a very unusual rock mass formation. It appears to be fused together. Its colors are black, rust and tan. It weighs 3 1/2 pounds and is 8-by-9-by-12 inches. I believe it might be a meteorite. I would appreciate any information on whom I could contact that is well-acquainted with meteorites. S.R., Roanoke

A: The Department of Geological Sciences at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg may be able to help you, said Linda Bland, a spokesperson for the department.

You could either mail the rock or take it by the department to have it examined. Since the rock you found is rather large and considering the recent hike in postage rates, it would probably be easier to take it there in person. The department is on the fourth floor in Derring Hall. No appointment is necessary, Bland said.

Bunnies recalled

> Kellogg Co. of Battle Creek, Mich., is recalling 15,576 plush bunnies given away in supermarket promotions because the eyes and noses could break off and pose a choking hazard to young children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said recently.

The bunnies are white with pink ears, feet and noses, and carry the name "Kellogg's" on a tag attached to the back. They were given away in some stores on March 14 and 15.

Consumers with bunnies were asked to call Kellogg's at (800) 468-9004 for instructions on their return.
