GATLING, TARRANT GET TOP HONORS

Old Dominion's Kenny Gatling and Richmond's Dick Tarrant were awarded top honors by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Gatling was voted the state Player of the Year after averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game. Tarrant was chosen as Coach of the Year, after the Spiders upset Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Bryant Stith of Virginia and Richmond's Curtis Blair, a former standout Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School, were chosen for the All-State first team. Radford's Doug Day, a former Blacksburg star, and Virginia's John Crotty were placed on the second team.

First team - Chris Gatling, Old Dominion; Bryant Stith, Virginia; Kendrick Warren, Virginia Commonwealth; Steve hood, James Madison; Curtis Blair, Richmond.
