GEORGE CAREY TO LEAD CHURCH OF ENGLAND

George Carey became the 103rd archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual head of the Church of England, on Wednesday after his brother bishops judged him to be "both prudent and discreet."

To ensure that everything was legal, five wigged attorneys joined the nine bishops around a table before the altar in the church of St. Mary-le-Bow.

Carey looked on as documents were read to confirm his election three weeks ago by Canterbury Cathedral officials.
