2 OPERATIONS FOR OBESITY ENDORSED

A panel of experts has endorsed two operations that restrict or bypass the stomach as a means of helping severely obese people lose some of their flab.

The surgeries have helped extremely overweight people reduce their weight.

In one type of surgery, a lobe of the stomach is stapled with stainless steel wire. This forces food to pass more quickly into the lower digestive tract.

The other surgery involves attaching the lower intestine to the upper portion of the stomach and then stapling the rest of the stomach closed. This restricts the amount of food that can be eaten and speeds digestion.
