TERRIERS RALLY TO TIE BOBCATS IN 6 INNINGS

William Byrd scored six runs in the fourth inning and tied visiting Radford 6-6 in a non-district game called because of darkness after six innings Wednesday.

Under Virginia High School League rules, the game will not be continued and each team gets credit for half a win and half a loss.

For Radford (1 1/2- 1/2), Bro Smith was 3-for-4.

In the sixth for William Byrd (2 1/2- 1/2), Brian Young had an RBI double, Steve Short had a two-run single and Mark Shepherd tied the score with a two-run triple.

In other baseball:

At Forest, Jefferson Forest got home runs from J.R. Burks and Troy Smith in beating William Campbell 9-2 in a Seminole District game.

Smith was 2-for-3 for the Cavaliers (1-3 overall and in the district). William Campbell is 0-4.

Mark Schwartz went 2-for-2 and had four RBI, including a three-run homer, as Cave Spring (1-1) ruined visiting Alleghany's season opener with a 10-2 victory. Steve Driscoll went 3-for-3 and added two RBI.

At Staunton River, Altavista's Ron Bennett pitched a complete-game three-hitter as the Colonels beat the Golden Eagles 5-1.

Altavista is 3-1; Staunton River is 0-4. The game does not count in the Seminole District standings.

At Floyd County, Narrows beat the Buffaloes 6-1 in a game that does not count in the Mountain Empire District standings. Floyd is 0-3; Narrows is 1-0.

At William Fleming, Salem pitcher Corey Epperly allowed three hits and struck out 12 as the Spartans won 4-0 in a non-district game. William Fleming is 0-3 and has lost to Salem twice.

\ SOFTBALL: At Lord Botetourt, Melissa Markham's two-run single in the fifth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted James River to an 8-6 victory in non-district girls' softball.

James River (2-0), trailing 5-3 entering the fifth, tied the score on a bases-loaded walk and a base hit by Brenda Smith. Kim Jones' bases-loaded triple in the third inning and Ashley Moore's two-run single in the fourth had given Lord Botetourt (0-2) a lead.

William Byrd opened its season with a 10-4 victory over Patrick Henry. Marcee Hufton picked up the win and Kim Saunders was credited with the loss for the Patriots (0-2).

At E.C. Glass, Cave Spring's Nikki Clowers hit a grand slam in the second inning to propel the Knights to a 17-10 non-district victory over E.C. Glass (1-1).

Angela Repass had a three-run homer in the fifth for Cave Spring (1-2).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At William Byrd, Wes Burrow scored on a penalty kick to lift Patrick Henry (1-0) over William Byrd (0-1) for a 2-1 non-district victory. Jesse Dunker scored the Patriots' other goal.

At Pulaski, Pulaski County beat Virginia High 2-0 in a non-district game. Neil Leahy and Chuck Fox scored for Pulaski (1-1-1); both were assisted by Craig Dobyns. Virginia is 0-2.

James River and Radford tied 2-2 despite two overtimes. Jimmy Harris and Tom Eide scored for James River (0-0-1).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Beth Prillaman scored one minute into the second half to lift host Patrick Henry past Salem 1-0 in girls' soccer. Liz Wedemeyer assisted on the goal for the Patriots (4-0).

\ TRACK: Floyd County's Fred Via won the long jump and 200-meter run and was on the winning 400 relay team as Floyd County's boys and girls won a tri-meet over Shawsville and Fort Chiswell.

Monica Lucas won the long jump, 100-and 200-meter dashes, and was on the winning 400 relay team.
