MANAGERS THRIVE AS WORKERS SUFFER

ACCORDING to your New York Times News Service article March 18, some executives received pay increases of 8 percent or more at the expense of company profits and their workers. These companies have laid off workers, closed down plants and/or moved production out of the country to small nations that have no minimum-wage laws (or very low wages) and no benefits.

This means there are fewer people in this country paying taxes, saving money, buying goods and services or investing. Still wonder why we are in a recession? Upper management has fancy retreats, fleets of jets and fine cars, expensive offices, etc., all at company expense, and then a huge salary and bonuses! There are no rules governing big business and how much they can make, but there are moral laws of mankind that they are ignoring.

Somewhere the bottom line became greed instead of profit. If these executives feel they are being bashed, let them respond by proving "it ain't so." Do they care? BARBARA GARRETT RINER
