WORKER SAVES NEWBORN SON OF 12-YEAR-OLD

A newborn boy dropped down a garbage chute into a trash compactor by his 12-year-old mother was rescued by a worker who heard the infant's cries just before the compactor was turned on, police said.

The 6-pound, 10-ounce boy was taken to a hospital where he was reported in stable condition today.

The newborn's umbilical cord was still attached when he was found inside the compactor Wednesday morning, said police spokesman Detective Joseph Gallagher.

McArthur Williams, a maintenance man at the Brooklyn apartment building, said he was about to turn on the compactor when he heard the baby crying. "The crying was what got him over," Williams said.

Detectives traced the baby to the 12-year-old, who admitted throwing the baby down the chute shortly after giving birth in her fourth-floor apartment. She will not be charged with a crime because of her age, a police spokesman said today.
