KIWANIS CLUBS TO HONOR BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Mike Fayed, a senior at Cave Spring High School, will receive player of the year honors from three Kiwanis clubs at an awards ceremony tonight at the Quality Inn in Salem.

The 24th annual event - sponsored by the Salem, Williamson Road and Botetourt clubs - will include awards for the All-Kiwanis high school basketball team, coach of the year, unsung hero, official of the year and the school selected as tops in sportsmanship.

In addition to Fayed, the All-Kiwanis team members are Troy Anderson and Tim Basham of Patrick Henry, Chad Briscoe and John Baker of Northside, Dontel Arrington of William Fleming and Bobby Prince of Lord Botetourt. This year's squad has seven members because of ties in the voting by the coaches.

The second-team members are Jeremy Blackstock of Cave Spring, John Smith of William Byrd, Tee Jennings of Fleming, Derek Jones of James River and Scott Wagstaff of Glenvar.

Unsung heroes, selected by the coaches, are Jeff Summerlin of North Cross, Tony Cayton of Cave Spring, Mike Sessions of Salem, Carlos Rhodes of Fleming, Clinton Barlow of James River, Scott Sartini of Roanoke Catholic, Chuck Bailey of Northside, Bryan Young of Byrd, Jeff Bonham of Lord Botetourt, Troy Manns of Patrick Henry and Chad Willis of Glenvar.

Bill Pope, who led Northside to the Group AA Blue Ridge District title and the Region 3 finals, will receive coach-of-the-year honors.

The sportsmanship award goes to Glenvar, based on the conduct of the players, coaches, cheerleaders, fans and school officials.

Jerry Henderson will be given the Rex T. Mitchell memorial officials award.
