FOR KICKS: Speed, excitement, color and off-the-walls contact will fill Rector Field House at Virginia Tech Saturday and Sunday during the 14th annual Virginia Tech Indoor Soccer Tournament.

Among the teams: West Virginia University, Roanoke College, Lynchburg College, Washington & Lee University, James Madison University and the University of Tennessee.

The tourney runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free. \

WORLD BEAT: Music from Mexico and Guatemala will mix with classical and contemporary works Thursday night at 8 when the Radford University Percussion and Marimba Ensemble takes the stage at Preston Hall on the Radford campus.

Director Al Wojtera says the program will include the "Dance of the Comedians" from Smetana's "The Bartered Bride."

Something for everyone, in other words, at a price of $3 per person.

SWEETNESS: The Whitetop Mountain Maple Sugar Festival continues Saturday and Sunday in the Whitetop-Mount Rogers area. Pancake meals will be served at the Mount Rogers school on U.S. 58, where arts and crafts will be sold.

Mount Rogers Fire Hall, 6 miles west on U.S. 58, will be the site of mountain music, bluegrass, country and old-time. Chili beans, hot dogs and homemade cakes will be on sale there.

Tapping tours and open house at the Sugar House also are on the bill, as are storytelling and a wildflower slide show at Faith Lutheran Church, across from the schoolhouse.

The festival will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. For more information call 388-3294. \

SCOTTISH POP: The Cocteau Twins and special guests, Blackgirls, will play Thursday night at 8 at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center.

The band is known for its ethereal sounds. Recent albums include "Heaven or Las Vegas."

GOOD EGGS: This is the weekend for Easter egg hunts. Here are two of the larger ones.

The Salvation Army's hunt will be Saturday afternoon at 1 in Jackson Park in Roanoke. It's open to children age 12 and under. Thousands of eggs - count 'em - will be hidden, and prizes will be given to participants. Refreshments will be available.

The Tanglewood Mall Egg Hunt will feature 1,000 eggs concealed throughout the mall on Saturday. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. The hunt begins at 10:30. It's for kids ages 3 to 7. \

ROMANTIC SAGA: "Diamond Studs" is under way this weekend at Ferrum College's Sale Theatre. It uses traditional music to look at the life of Jesse James.

Rex Stephenson directs the play, written by Jim Wann. Show time is 8 p.m. It continues Thursday through April 6.

SPECIAL OCCASION: Longtime radio personality Jack Fisher will observe the 25th anniversary of his broadcast partnership with the late Fred Frelantz Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on WROV radio, 1240 AM in Roanoke.

The wacky pair first took to the airwaves in March 1966. Frelantz died in June 1986.

Fisher will tell stories and play snippets of old shows in addition to his usual servings of music from the '50s and '60s.

\ GALAXY OF (AREA) STARS: At the Coffee Pot in Roanoke, January Rose, the Roanoke Valley rockers, will play tonight and Saturday night. Call 774-8256 for information.

\ The Floyd Jazz Ensemble will perform Saturday night at 9:30 at the Pine Tavern Restaurant in Floyd. Call 745-4482.

At the Iroquois Club in Roanoke, the finals of four weeks of battles among 16 bands will take place Saturday night, starting around 9. The finalists are: Multiple-O of Ferrum, Murata from Roanoke, Common Ground from Blacksburg and Warden from Lynchburg. The musical is all original - no cover songs allowed. Admission is $4.

\ The Fabulous Cruisers will play Charades at the Roanoke Airport Marriott tonight and Saturday night starting at 8. Admission is $3.
