CONSTRUCTION FIRM CLEARED IN WORKER'S FALL

The construction company that employed a man killed last October in a fall at the Dominion Tower project in downtown Roanoke has been cleared of safety violations by a state Department of Labor and Industry investigation.

Servando Puente Rojas, 25, a laborer for Dee Shoring Inc., a Richmond subcontractor, fell from the seventh floor of the office building while he was trying to move bracing used to support concrete. Another worker was injured in the accident.

The state report released Thursday said Dee Shoring took appropriate steps to instruct employees on safety and provided adequate safety training and safety equipment at the site. It said no violations were found, and that the case has been closed.

At the time of the accident, the construction company had agreed to monitor closely its employees for safety procedures because of violations found at a Richmond construction site.

Carol Amato, commissioner of the Department of Labor & Industry, said the violations were not wilful, however, and that the company had an average safety record.

No one at Dee Shoring could be reached for comment Thursday.
