MALI `LIBERATOR' HAILED; INMATES DESERT PRISON

Lt. Col. Amadou Toumani Toure was hailed Thursday as a "liberator" when he visited the graves of people burned to death by soldiers in rioting that preceded his barracks coup this week.

Also Thursday, state radio reported all 1,468 common criminals at Bamako's central prison escaped two days earlier. It said prisoners escaped in the northwestern town of Kayes and the southern town of Bougouni, but did not say how many.

Toure's overthrow of Gen. Moussa Traore on Tuesday appears to have ended 22 years of military dictatorship and one-party rule. - Associated Press
