At a news conference after NCR's annual meeting here Thursday, Charles Exley Jr., the company's chairman, said the companies were moving closer to an agreement and would soon continue negotiations. He added, "It is not going to happen over the Easter weekend if I have anything to say about it."
Although Exley said he still wanted NCR to remain independent, AT&T executives said they were optimistic about the apparent shift in Exley's position.
NCR's share price jumped $2 on Thursday, to $99.625, on the New York Stock Exchange, while AT&T.'s fell 50 cents, to $34.25.
Neither company would say when the next session of talks was scheduled to take place. Exley said that future talks would be multilevel and that he expected to talk again with AT&T's chairman, Robert E. Allen.
