FOR METHODIST, RUNS PILE UP AT RECORD PACE

After losing by 20 runs a few weeks ago, the Methodist College baseball team didn't get overconfident when it scored 15 runs in the first inning.

But the hits kept coming, and so did the runs - an NCAA-record 43 in all in a 43-0 victory over Maryville (Tenn.) College at Fayetteville, N.C.

The previous record was set by Virginia Tech in a 42-3 victory over King College 1902. The previous lower division record of 37 was set by Division III Bates against Thomas (Maine) in 1985 and matched by Division II Washburn against Mid-American Nazarene in 1988. Methodist and Maryville are Division III.

Methodist had 34 hits off five Maryville pitchers. Freshman outfielder Brandon Bridgers went 7-for-7. Bridgers and Kevin Jones scored six runs each.
