LEAD POISONING DEATH PROMPTS CALL FOR TESTING

Health officials are calling for yearly blood tests for lead poisoning in young children after a Wisconsin boy died from exposure to lead-based paint, the first such death reported in more than a decade.

The death of the 28-month-old was documented in a report issued Thursday by the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Wisconsin epidemiologist Joe Shirmer said the case proves children must be tested yearly for levels of lead in their blood because symptoms do not appear until poisoning has reached dangerous levels.
