A police spokesman said Thursday that there have been five such burglaries - and one attempted break-in - over the past month.
Homes have been burglarized on Arlington Road, Maiden Lane, Oxford Avenue, Lincoln Avenue and Denniston Avenue.
Although police are not sure one person is responsible, the burglaries seem to fit a pattern.
The break-ins have occured late at night or early in the morning after residents have gone to sleep. One house was entered through an unlocked basement door, but in all the others the burglar broke windows in the rear of the homes.
Once inside, the burglar seems to concentrate on purses and camera equipment, such a video camcorders, police said.
In all cases, the burglar has been able to break in and steal the items without rousing the residents.
In other police reports Thursday:
The manager of a Northwest Roanoke convenience store was shot in the foot Wednesday night after he went outside to investigate reports that someone had broken the window of his truck. Ron G. Hamad told police that when he went outside the B&G Grocery Mart on the 1000 block of Lafayette Boulevard, a man standing across the street fired a handgun several times. Hamad was hit in the left foot as he ran back into the store. He was treated at Lewis-Gale Hospital.
A Bedford County man told police that he was beaten by a group of six people and robbed of $400 Wednesday night on Hunt Avenue Northwest. Timmy Wayne Blankenship, 21, said the group approached his car, beat him and took his wallet. He apparently was not seriously injured.
