FRANKLIN TO SEEK LOAN FOR SCHOOL FURNACES

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors on Thursday authorized the School Board to apply for a $320,000 state loan to replace coal-fired furnaces at three schools.

Lee Waid, Sontag and Snow Creek elementary schools will receive new oil-fired boilers by September 1992 if the state Literary Fund loan is approved.

In addition, the School Board has included $89,355 in next year's operating budget to replace the 29-year-old furnace at Ferrum Elementary School this summer.

The supervisors balked at a School Board plan to replace boilers at eight schools at a total cost of nearly $800,000.

To pay off the 3 percent Literary Fund loan for the furnaces, the county will spend $37,513 a year over a 10-year period.
