CONVICTED DOCTOR PLANS TO APPEAL

A doctor convicted of defrauding insurance programs for the poor and elderly plans to appeal, his attorney told a judge Thursday.

William Harris was sentenced last month to serve 15 years in prison and to pay a $15,000 fine for conspiring to steal from the Medicare program and for defrauding Medicaid while he was employed at a Forest medical and chiropractic clinic.

Circuit Judge William Sweeney ruled Thursday that Harris may remain free while awaiting his appeal. Harris told the judge that he wants to clear up some personal matters and plans to report to jail in about a month.

Harris will be represented by Public Defender Webster Hogeland in his appeal.
