HOW IGNORE BILLIONS FOR S&L BAILOUT?

A RECENT story notified taxpayers that the Senate voted for an additional $30 billion to rescue savings and loans. The president will no doubt sign the bill, since his son Neil is involved in the S&L debacle.

During the past 10 years of the Reagan and Bush administrations, this so-called protection of the S&L depositors has cost the taxpayers $80 billion, plus a so-called loan of another $100 billion that may or may not be returned to the Treasury. The last money goes to the Resolution Trust Corp.

How can the American people ignore all this when we desperately need money for improvement to schools, roads and medical care? As yet no one has been able to explain the horrible loss. CLYDE W. PRESTON ROANOKE
