But Hix, a Blacksburg police officer, got the last laugh. He emerged the contest winner out of 1,138 entrants.
Hix and two other contestants scored seven correct answers out of eight. He was chosen in a drawing held by the newspaper's marketing department.
"You're kidding," Hix said when informed of his win.
The only category Hix missed was best supporting actress. His wife told him to pick Whoopi Goldberg, who played the comic psychic in "Ghost." He picked Lorraine Bracco for her role as the mobster's wife in "Goodfellas."
However, Deborah missed "two or three" answers, Hix noted.
The Hixes are movie enthusiasts and go about once every two weeks. Hix says he hasn't seen all the movies that were nominated for best picture this year. Among the ones he missed is "Dancing With Wolves," the leading Oscar winner.
Instead, Hix second-guessed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters on the basis of Costner's multiple roles in bringing the picture to the screen. He was star and director - and an early favorite in the best picture and best director categories.
Hix says he just picked the contestants he liked, a tactic Deborah followed two years ago. A dispatcher with the Christiansburg police department, Deborah tied Susan Loyd of Roanoke in 1989 with a perfect score. They were the only two out of 1,336 entrants to get all the categories right.
Joe Pesci's performance as the gregarious psychotic in "Goodfellas" was the only one Hix says he felt truly confident about.
He watched the Oscars broadcast Monday and kept score.
"I felt like I had a pretty good chance," he said.
As his prize, Hix will receive 52 free tickets to the movie theater of his choice.
