WEST VIRGINIA STAR PICKS LADY HOKIES

Stephanie Carter, a 6-foot forward from Morgantown High School who was the West Virginia Class AAA player of the year, has made an oral commitment to play women's basketball at Virginia Tech, Morgantown coach Allan Collins said.

Collins said Carter's final decision was between Tech and Ohio State. He said Carter cited Tech's academic support program and the opportunity for immediate playing time as factors in her decision.

"She's got the athleticism that sets her apart from most girls' basketball players," Collins said. "She's very quick and has an explosive first step."

In her senior season, Carter averaged 20.7 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.9 steals in leading the Mohigans to a 23-3 record and the West Virginia Class AAA state championship. The three-year starter averaged 17.3 points over her career and set the school record for career points with 1,280. - Staff report
