TECH RUNNERS BREAK COURSE RECORDS IN 10K

Virginia Tech's David Smith and Heidi Allen set course records Friday at the 1991 Battleground Relays at Mary Washington College.

Smith, a senior from Virginia Beach, won the 10,000-meter run in 31 minutes, 15.9 seconds, breaking the 8-year-old record of 31:38.5.

Allen, a junior from Arnold, Md., broke the women's 10,000 record with a time of 36:20.0. The former mark was 38:38.1.

Tech's Mike Sergent won the hammer throw with a toss of 165 feet, 11 inches.

Other Tech finishers in the meet were Alice Gaines, third in the 10,000, and Xzabier Jackson, eighth in the 10,000.
