WOMEN'S COACHES VOTE STALEY NO. 1

Virginia's Dawn Staley, described by coach Debbie Ryan as "the glue" of a team favored to win the NCAA women's championship, was voted Division I player of the year Friday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Staley had 195 assists this season and averaged five steals per game. She averaged 14.3 points.

Tracy Saunders of Norfolk State was voted player of the year in Division II, and Ann Gilbert of Oberlin was selected in Division III.

Saunders got her 2,000th point in the NCAA playoffs this year and is just short of 1,000 career rebounds. Gilbert holds the Division III record of 61 points in a game.

Michelle Hendry of Simon Fraser University is the NAIA player of the year. She led Simon Fraser to a 27-3 season.

Sheryl Swoopes of South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, was voted junior-college player of the year after averaging 25 points and 11.5 rebounds.
