TWA UNION ASSEMBLES BUYOUT BID

Union leaders said Friday they had reached an agreement with negotiators for California billionaire Kirk Kerkorian that could pave the way for a purchase of Trans World Airlines. Unionized pilots for TWA said that a deal had been reached.

The last-minute deal was struck hours before a deadline for comments to be submitted to the Transportation Department in Washington on TWA's proposed sale of lucrative London routes to healthy rival American Airlines.

TWA, one of the most heavily indebted airlines in the country, has endured enormous financial problems, particularly in the past several months, because of the recession and higher fuel prices.

It has defaulted on a large loan and has hinted of possible refuge in bankruptcy court, as some other large U.S. carriers already have done.
