VA. LABOR UNION ELECTIONS DECLINE

Labor unions won more representation elections in Virginia last year but the total number of elections held decreased from 1989, according to the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Unions won 19 and companies were the winners in 21 of the 40 elections held in 1990, according to figures tabulated by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. In 1989, unions won 18 while companies won 35 elections.

The number of petitions for elections increased from 71 to 86 but the elections held by the National Labor Relations Board declined from 53 to 40. The number of decertification petitions filed was down from eight to four.

The busiest union last year was the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which filed 15 petitions and won two while losing two elections. The Teamsters were next, filing 14 petitions and winning three but losing five elections. - Staff report
