MAN FREED BY MISTAKE HITS, KILLS WOMAN

A man sought in the theft of a van and traffic death of a woman was free from jail because of a mistake made on a court document that later was accepted by a judge.

Thomas A. Nixon was driving a stolen van Thursday that slammed into the driver's door of a car driven by Susan Kathleen Deaton, 28, police said. Deaton died in the accident. Two pedestrians struck by the van also were injured.

Nixon, 28, climbed out of the van after the crash and ran away. He remained free Friday night.

Nixon was released from jail on $3,000 bond earlier this month, even though a General District Court judge earlier had set his bond at 10 times that amount.
