SMYTH YOUTH COUNCIL GETS ANTI-DRUG FUNDS

The Nancy Reagan Foundation has awarded a $7,935 grant to the Smyth County Youth Council to continue its efforts to have young people resist peer pressure for drug and alcohol abuse.

The council was formed in 1989 by people between the ages of 13 and 18. They have taken training seminars and workshops on leadership, communication, substance-abuse prevention, public speaking, self-esteem and parent-child relations.

The council is now a subcommittee of the Smyth County Youth Services Advisory Board, has 25 members and is operated by the Mount Rogers Prevention Services and county Youth Office.

The foundation grant will be used to promote youth involvement in the community and continue drug-free activities and programs.

Further information on council programs or how to join is available by telephoning Vanessa Cox or Lisa Sholes at 783-1919.
