ENVIRONMENTALISTS SUE OVER DIOXIN STANDARDS

Two environmental groups asked a federal court Friday to declare unlawful the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's recent approval of Virginia's water quality standard for dioxin.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court by the Environmental Defense Fund and the Natural Resources Defense Council, also seeks to require the EPA to set a new dioxin limit for Virginia based on federal criteria.

The lawsuit marks the second time the groups have challenged the EPA over dioxin. The groups originally sued the EPA in late 1990 for approving a standard of 1.2 parts per quadrillion for Maryland. Virginia's dioxin limit is also 1.2 ppq.
