Pulaski made its first state tournament, then defeated Phoebus to play in the final, where it fell to James Madison. The Cougars' victory marked the first time a Roanoke Valley District team had ever won a state tournament game.
Reedy's team lost only to Cave Spring - a Group AAA semifinalist - before the tournament, but defeated the Knights three other times.
Jackie Freeman, who over her career led James Madison to a 100-13 record and the 1990-91 state title, was selected the girls' basketball player of the year.
Pulaski also was represented by Terri Garland, who joined Freeman on the AP's first team, chosen by sports writers and broadcasters from throughout the state.
Garland, a 5-foot-7 junior and a tough defensive player, led her team to the final of its first Group AAA tournament. Garland averaged 16.8 points, 4.7 assists and made 47.7 percent of her field-goal attempts.
The other members of the first team included Chantel Adkins of Henrico, Charleta Beale of Gar-Field and Mara Cunningham of Fairfax.
The 5-11 Freeman made 41 percent of her 3-point attempts and averaged 3.5 rebounds. In the Group AAA championship game, she scored two 3-pointers in 43 seconds to stop a Pulaski rally, and James Madison won 65-47.
Adkins, a 5-8 senior, averaged 32.3 points, 14.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists in making the All-Group AAA team for the second consecutive year. She will attend Temple.
The 6-0 Beale averaged 22.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, four 3-pointers and four assists. She led Gar-Field to 53 consecutive district victories.
The 6-3 Cunningham averaged 23 points, 16.3 rebounds and 5.3 blocks. She led Fairfax to an 81-14 record in four years. She had a high of 38 points this season.
The second team is Zekie Blanding of Lee-Springfield, Michele Hager of Kempsville, Ali Colgrove of Cave Spring, Lisa McCloud of Huguenot and Heather Phillips of Robinson.
