WHITAKER BECOMES BULLDOGS' SAVING GRACE

Jeff Whitaker got the final out to help Martinsville hold off Patrick County 5-2 in Piedmont District boys' baseball action on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (4-0) led 5-2 in the ninth inning, when the Cougars (2-1) loaded the bases against starter Franco Martin. In came Whitaker, who with two-outs, took the ball, and struck out Chris Stanley to preserve the win.

Martinsville led 1-0 entering the sixth inning. The Bulldogs then scored four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead. - Staff report
