HANSEL SETS RECORD

Virginia-bred Hansel circled pace-setters Apollo and Richman at the top of the stretch, then drew away to win the $500,000 Jim Beam Stakes in record time at Florence, Ky.

Hansel, owned by Joe L. Allbritton's Lazy Lane Farm, slashed more than two seconds from the Turfway Park and Beam Stakes records, finishing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46 3/5.

Hansel had been made the third favorite at 4-1 in the morning line but went off at 9-2. The colt returned $11.20, $4.40 and $4.
