TOP BILLING FOR BILLS TO CURB BILLBOARDS

THIS IS in reply to the self-serving Commentary Page article March 20 by Benjamin G. Anderson Jr. in praise of the billboard industry. He decries legislation in the House and Senate to control and eventually reduce the spread of billboards along federal highways.

Let me tell Mr. Anderson, anything that will help to get rid of these monsters has my support. The steady proliferation of signs along our highways seems endless; no scenic vista is spared. They constitute an enormous public nuisance.

I was not aware that billboard legislation was in the mill, but now that I am, you can bet I will urge its passage. And I hope that others who are fed up with this ugly blight on our landscape will contact their lawmakers to that end. WILLIAM J. WOODS BEDFORD
