TECH, JAMES MADISON SOCCER TEAMS WIN

Host Virginia Tech and James Madison compiled 7-1 records for the weekend and each won a segment of the Hokies' 14th annual Spring Soccer Tournament at Rector Fieldhouse.

Tech won in the final of the round-robin portion of the tournament, and James Madison won the elimination segment.

In the semifinals of Saturday's round-robin play, which finished early Sunday, the Hokies and VMI played to a 2-2 tie in regulation and Tech won 3-0 in a shootout. In the other semifinal, James Madison and West Virginia tied 1-1, and West Virginia won 4-2 in a shootout.

In the round-robin final, the Hokies beat the Dukes 3-2.

In Sunday's elimination tournament semifinals, Virginia Tech defeated VMI 3-0 and James Madison beat Tennessee 8-0.

In the championship game, JMU defeated Virginia Tech 3-1.

The leading scorer of the elimination tournament was Pat Burke of James Madison with five goals Sunday. The leading scorer in round-robin play was Kevin Weis of VMI, who had five goals on Saturday.

Roanoke College lost 3-2 to VMI in the first round Sunday, then won two games in the losers' bracket. The Maroons tied Guilford 2-2 in regulation and won 4-2 in a shootout, then defeated Lynchburg 5-3.

In addition to losing to Tech and beating Roanoke, VMI also beat Tennessee 5-3.

Eight teams participated in Sunday's play: Guilford, Lynchburg, Tennessee, VMI, Virginia Tech, James Madison, Roanoke and Anne Arundel of Maryland.
