DRIVER'S NAP EXACTS HOT, HEAVY TOLL

More than his eyelids got heavy when Terry Wayne Marshall took a nap early Saturday.

When a Roanoke police officer spotted Marshall's truck in a Williamson Road parking lot, there was fire coming from underneath. The engine was revving, the cab was filled with smoke, and Marshall was inside cutting some zzzz's.

The officer grabbed him and hauled him to safety before using a fire extinguisher on the blaze.

Marshall, 28, of Wentworth Avenue Northeast, told police he'd been asleep for some time and must have had his foot on the gas pedal.

Roanoke police also reported:

Mark Randall Carter, 19, of Vinton was beaten early Sunday in the parking lot of Rotten Rodney's in the 3500 block of Franklin Road Southwest. Carter, of Aragona Drive, was bleeding from the mouth and nose when officers arrived about 2:10 a.m. He said he had punched one of three men who had hit and kicked him.

A 24-year-old woman said she was raped Saturday morning in a downtown building still under construction. The woman said her attacker bought her a cup of coffee and followed her into the building where she had gone to use a pay telephone. She was taken to Community Hospital.

Joseph John Schriefer, 33, of Tazewell Avenue Southeast, was knocked unconscious in a dispute over the cooking of an Easter ham. Schriefer was taken to Community Hospital. His brother, Charles William Schriefer, 24, was charged with assault and battery.
