17 OF REGION'S PUPILS IN SPELLING BEE

Seventeen pupils from Western Virginia school districts will compete in the 1991 Regional Spelling Bee at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The contest, sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News for the 18th year, will be held at the Sheraton Airport Inn.

Contestants advanced to the regionals after winning their classroom, school and division spelling bees.

More than 25,000 pupils competed.

The winner will get an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., May 26-June 1 to compete in the National Spelling Bee.

The winner also will receive a set of The New Encyclopedia Britannica, $100 in spending money for the trip to Washington and an engraved plaque.

Second prize is a copy of The Random House Dictionary of the English Language Unabridged.

Third prize is a hard-cover copy of Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary and a hard-cover copy of Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus.

Fourth prize is a hard-cover copy of the World Almanac.

The Roanoke Times & World-News will present engraved trophies to all the division finalists.

Each school champion receives an inscribed pen-and-pencil set and a certificate. Classroom champions receive a certificate.

Prizes in the national finals total $26,550.

Stephanie Laprade, 13, Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Franklin County, daughter of Earl and Jane Laprade.

Eric Dillon Lovitt, 14, Floyd County High School in Floyd County, son of Scott and Isabell Lovitt.

William F. Plummer, 11, King Johnston School in Giles County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis R. Plummer.

Jessie Maria Shires, 12, McCleary Elementary in Craig County, daughter of Patricia and Gary Shires.

Pamela Lynn McGhee, 11, Chilhowie Elementary in Smyth County, daughter of Tom and Joyce McGhee.

Shabnam Gideon, 13, Botetourt Intermediate in Botetourt County, daughter of Mrs. Lawrence Onan.

Jennifer Lynn Leitch, 11, Jeter-Watson Intermediate in Covington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Leitch.
