SHIRK, MILDRED R.

BLACKSBURG - Mrs. Mildred Rockwell Shirk died Monday, April 1, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Inverness, Maryland on April 2, 1918. She is survived by her husband, Frank C. Shirk of Blacksburg; a son, David F. Shirk of Norfolk; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. and Henry L. Wood of Midlothian; three grandchildren, Henry III, Andrew and Jennifer Wood, all of Midlothian; and a sister, Lucille R. Ritzel of Westover, Md. Mrs. Shirk received degrees from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia and Drexel Institute of Technology. She had been the librarian at Blacksburg Elementary School, a reference librarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Director of the Montgomery Radford Regional Library, Library Director of New River Vally Community College, and retired as Director of the Radford Public Library. Mrs. Shirk served as President of the Blacksburg Junior Womens Club and was a co-founder of the Blacksburg Intermediate Womens Club. She was a member of A.A.U.W., Zeta Tau Alpha, and chairman of the Mary Washington College Regional Scholarship Committee. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. She was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Shirk was selected for inclusion in The World Who's Who of Women, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Library Service Virginia Lives, International Who's Who, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Personalities of the South, 2000 Women of Achievement, International Who's Who in Community Service, and International Scholars Directory. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Northside Presbyterian Church, 1017 Progress Street, N.W., Blacksburg, Va., 24060; New River Valley Hospice, Inc., 600 Price's Fork Road, Blacksburg, Va., 24060; or to a favorite charity. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 3, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Hoy-McCoy Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Northside Presbyterian Church.
