A SAMPLING OF CHOIRS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Here are some of the choral organizations in the region that are open to the public:

ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS CHORALE: Director: Kathy Crutchfield, minister of music, Clifton Forge Baptist Church. Members: 50-60. Auditions: Yes, but few turned away. Next auditions will be in the fall. Rehearsals: Monday nights, 7:30 to 9, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Covington.

Repertoire: Classical, spirituals, show tunes and Christmas songs.\ Fees: Each member must buy own music.

Performing attire: Women - long black skirts, white blouses; men - navy blazers, gray pants, white shirts, dark ties.

Performances: Three or four per year.

Next performance: Saturday, 7 p.m., First Presbyterian Church in Covington.

\ BLACKSBURG MASTER CHORALE: Director: Craig Fields, assistant professor of music, Virginia Tech. Members: 70. Auditions: Informal interview. Rehearsals: Tuesday nights, 7:30 to 9:30, Blacksburg Presbyterian Church.

Repertoire: Major works by major composers plus Christmas music. Fees: $5 per month. Performing attire: Men - tuxedos or dark suits; women - long black skirts, white blouses.

Performances: Three per year. Next performance: Oct. 26, 8 p.m., site to be announced.

\ MUSIC FOR AMERICANS CHORUS: Director: Stan Kingma. Members: About 100. Auditions: Late May. Rehearsals: To be announced.

Repertoire: Patriotic and popular music. Fees: Free; sponsored by Roanoke Times & World-News. Performing attire: To be announced.

Performances: One per year, on July 4 in Victory Stadium.

\ NEW RIVER VALLEY CHORUS: Director: Lynn Loftus, music teacher, Dublin Middle School. Members: About 40. Auditions: Open membership. Rehearsals: Thursday nights, 7:30 to 9, Radford University's Powell Choral Hall.

Repertoire: Sacred music. Fees: Free except for occasional music purchases. Performing attire: Women - black skirts, white blouses; men - dark suits. Performances: Five per year. Next performance: April 14, 3 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski. Program will include Dublois' "Seven Last Words," Cousins' "Glorious Everlasting" and Haydn's "Achieved is the Glorious Work."

\ PIEDMONT CHORAL SOCIETY: Director: Ruth Pace. Members: 80. Auditions: Twice a year, next scheduled for late August; details to be announced. Rehearsals: Tuesday nights, 7:30 to 9:30, Martinsville High School Choral Room.

Repertoire: Major choral works, occasional light pieces. Fees: $15 per year plus music. Performing attire: Women - long black dresses; men - dark suits. Performances: Two or three per year. Next performance: April 28, 4 p.m., Martinsville High School. Verdi Requiem.

\ ROANOKE COLLEGE PREPARATORY DIVISION CHILDREN'S CHOIR: Director: Kim Davidson. Members: Appogiatura choir has 25 boys and girls ages 8 to 14, Bridge choir has 35 and Concert choir has 60. Auditions: May 22-23, 4 to 7 p.m. Based on child's ability to match pitch as well as their dedication. Rehearsals: Tuesdays, "A" choir, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; "B," 4:30 to 5:30; "C," 6 to 8.

Repertoire: Variety of classic, folk and sacred literature. Fees: $60 to $80 per semester. Performing attire: Girls - black taffeta skirts, white blouses; boys - black pants, white shirts, black suspenders, bow ties. Performances: "A" and "B" choirs perform Christmas and spring concerts. "C" choir gives about 15 performances per year. Next performance: June 9, 3 p.m., Olin Hall. Admission $3.

\ ROANOKE VALLEY CHORAL SOCIETY Director: Jeffrey Sandborg, associate professor of music, Roanoke College. Members: 110. Auditions: April 21, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Roanoke College's Olin Hall, Room 336. Rehearsals: Monday nights, 7:30 to 9:30, Virginia Heights Baptist Church, Roanoke.

Repertoire: Full choral repertory from light entertainment to symphonic works. Fees: $15 per year. Performing attire: Men - tuxedos; women - black dresses or long black skirts with black blouses. Performances: Average three per year. Next performance: Veterans Appreciation Day, May 5, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem.

\ ROANOKE VALLEY CHORUS OF SWEET ADELINES: Director: pending. Members: 21 women. Auditions: Open to any woman. Rehearsals: Tuesday nights, 7:30 to 10, Westhampton Christian Church, Roanoke.

Repertoire: Barbershop-style. Fees: Not available. Performing attire: Varies. Performances: About two per month. Next performance: To be announced.

\ ROCKBRIDGE CHORUS: Director: William McCorkle. Members: 50-65. Auditions: No formal auditions. Rehearsals: Monday nights, 7:30 to 9:30, varying locations.

Repertoire: Major works, oratorios, opera, chamber works, pops programs. Fees: None. Performing attire: Men - black tie; women - long black skirts, white blouses. Performances: Three or four per year. Next performance: December.

Repertoire: On-stage opera performance. Fees: Members receive honoraria. Performing attire: Costumes provided. Performances: Two productions per year. Next performance: May 16, 18, 20, Verdi's "Otello," Mill Mountain Theatre, Roanoke.
