KEYDETS TO NAME NEW AD

VMI has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. today in Lexington, where it is is expected to announce Davis Babb as the school's new athletic director.

Babb has been serving as interim athletic director since Eric Hyman resigned in December to become an assistant athletic director at North Carolina State.

Although no one at VMI would confirm that Babb will be selected, one source said, "Don't expect any surprises."

Babb was hired by Hyman in 1984 as an assistant athletic director and soon after was promoted to associate athletic director. His primary duty has been in the area of compliance. His additional roles include business manager, Cameron Hall manager and overseer of promotional activities and ticket sales. He also is executive producer of the VMI Sports Radio Network.

Babb's is one of five names chosen as finalists by the VMI athletic director search committee. The others are former VMI baseball and assistant football coach Donny White; East Carolina assistant athletic director Jimmy Bass; former Akron University athletic director Dave Adams; and former Tulane associate athletic director and business manager Kim Tidd.

Babb and White each said he had heard from VMI concerning the decision, but each said he preferred to let the school make the announcement. Bass was not in his office Monday, but officials in his department at East Carolina said he hadn't yet returned from a weekend visit to his relatives and was expected back in the office this morning. Tidd and Adams could not be reached for comment.
