COUGARS BUMP OFF CAVE SPRING

Tim Bower ripped his first home run of the season Tuesday and Pulaski County knocked off Cave Spring 6-4 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game.

Bower was 3-for-4 on the day and drove in four runs for the Cougars (2-2 overall, 1-1 RVD). The Knights (1-2, 0-1) were powered by Dee Dalton, who also cracked his first homer of the season. Dalton was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs.

In other baseball:

At Galax, Randy Billings went 2-3 with three runs batted in as the Maroon Tide defeated Floyd County 5-4. Lynn Crockett struck out 10 and scattered three hits over the last six innings for Galax (2-2), which scored the winning run on two-out suicide squeeze in the seventh inning.

Chad Burchinal struck out nine and scattered four hits and Aaron Lange and Ryan Shaver combined for six runs batted in as North Cross whipped host Lynchburg Christian 12-3 in Virginia Independent Conference game.

Lange had three hits and Shaver added a triple as North Cross improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Lynchburg is 0-2, 0-1.

At Pearisburg, Blacksburg's Ronald Mitchner went 2-for-2 and walked twice and Walker Smith homered to lift the Indians over the Spartans 12-3 in non-district contest.

Smith also was credited with the victory in relief of Matt Smith, no relation, as Blacksburg evened its record at 1-1. Giles fell to 1-2.

At Christiansburg, John Gunter drove in two with a two-out single as the Blue Devils rallied to a 3-2 victory and a double-header split with Lord Botetourt. Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Christiansburg (1-2) used three hits and two walks to take the lead.

Willie Sabo (1-1) tossed a two-hitter to pick up the victory.

In the first game, Lord Botetourt (1-1) took advantage of six Christiansburg errors to win 9-5. All of the Cavaliers' runs were unearned.

At William Fleming, Chris Coffey struck out 10 batters and Mike Suma was 3-for-3 with a double, but William Fleming (0-4, 0-1) lost 7-4 to Franklin County.

\ SOFTBALL: At Glenvar, Bobby Jo Wright didn't give up any hits and drove in three runs to lead the Highlanders past Lord Botetourt 12-2, in non-district action. Wright allowed seven walks as Glenvar improved to 2-0. The Cavaliers fell to 1-3.
