Four were indicted on charges involving a Blacksburg bank robbery, and a Tech employee was indicted on an embezzlement charge.
In the November slaying, Billy Joe Oxendine of the 2400 block of Welcome Road was indicted in the stabbing death of Christopher Stephen Myers. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
Myers, 20, was stabbed numerous times following an argument with Oxendine at the Shawnee apartment complex in Blacksburg. He died a short time later at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. No trial date has been set.
Kevin Blake Loflin, Stephanie Cornelius Nettles, Edward Wayne Beamer and Rebecca Lynn Beamer were indicted on robbery and firearms charges stemming from the robbery of $2,240 from the Hethwood branch of the National Bank of Blacksburg Dec. 11.
About three weeks later, Loflin was arrested in Yadkinville, N.C., and is now being held in the Montgomery County Jail in Christiansburg. Nettles is also being held in the Montgomery County Jail. Both Beamers are free on bond.
Kevin Maurice Simmons of Salem was indicted on charges of discharging a firearm into an occupied building at War Memorial Gym at Tech and possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. He is in Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.
A fight broke out at the Tech dance between a group of Roanoke Valley non-students and leaders of the Black Student Alliance, a sponsor of the event, when they tried to limit the number of people onstage at the end of a show.
Several were injured from chairs and tables thrown in the fight and two gunshots were also fired. Nobody was injured by the gunfire.
The grand jury indicted a former College of Education secretary on charges of embezzling nearly $3,500 from Tech. School spokesman Dave Nutter said Kimberly Denise Bennett resigned last May and moved to Tacoma, Wash. The missing funds were discovered later.
Also indicted in connection with the embezzlement was Bennett's boyfriend, James Everett Collins. The money was taken between August 1989 and May 1990, according to the indictments.
Nutter said Bennett returned to Virginia in December and turned herself in to police. She is in the Montgomery County Jail.
