WILDER TELLS MINORITIES TO PUSH CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

Gov. Douglas Wilder asked minority business leaders Tuesday night to lobby Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1991.

The Persian Gulf War was successful and fought by brave troops, and it should be an inspiration to fighting problems at home, he said in the prepared text of a speech to the Virginia Business Opportunity Fair, a trade show for minority-owned businesses.

Small businesses are crucial to Virginia's economy: more than 97 percent of the state's companies are small businesses by definition, and they provide nearly half of private sector jobs, Wilder said.
