NORFOLK STATE OKS TUITION INCREASES

Norfolk State University, squeezed by a $6 million cut next year in state aid, has approved increases in tuition and fees of 11.9 percent for out-of-state undergraduates and 6.9 percent for Virginia residents.

President Harrison Wilson, who announced the increases Tuesday, said he hoped the $150 increase for Virginia students would be a one-time surcharge. But the $550 increase for students outside Virginia will be permanent.

The increases, which are to take effect this fall, mean Norfolk State undergraduates from Virginia will pay a total of $2,330 per year. Undergraduates from other states will pay $5,160.
