GRUMMAN HIRES 15, CITES RISE IN ORDERS

Grumman Emergency Products Inc. of Roanoke has hired 15 production workers to handle an increase in fire-engine orders. The move, which will bring the plant's work force to 265, contrasts with an announcement Tuesday by its parent, Grumman Corp., that it will lay off 1,900 workers in defense operations elsewhere.

Bill Bruns, president of the Roanoke company, said it has "a pretty good backlog of orders," including five pumpers and a 121-foot aerial truck, worth $1.5 million, for the city of Roanoke. Thirteen engines were sent to Indianapolis and eight to Guam, he said. - Staff report
