ROANOKE FOOD PRICES RISE FASTEST IN STATE
Food prices rose 3.8 percent in the Roanoke Valley in March, the steepest
increase among four areas of the state monitored by the Virginia Department of
Agriculture and Consumer Services. The state agency, which surveys supermarket
prices monthly for a standard 40-item order, said they totaled $75.72 in March
in Roanoke area grocery stores. That's up from $72.93 in February and up 2
percent from $74.20 in March 1990, the state said.
The market basket report also showed the one-month increase in food prices
was 3.7 percent to $80.75 in Richmond, 3.2 percent to $78.98 in Norfolk, and
2.7 percent to $84.42 in Northern Virginia. - Staff report
