JAMES RIVER FRESHMAN SHACKLES HIGHLAND BATS

Freshman Keith Bryant allowed only two hits, had 10 strikeouts and walked five Wednesday in leading James River over visiting Highland County 15-2 in high school baseball.

Doug Monday and Brian Sink added homers for the Knights. Ryan Shotwell and Jody Steeger both were 2-for-3.

In other baseball:

At Marion, Brian Snavely pitched a three-hitter over five innings, striking out nine, as Marion (3-0) swamped Tazewell 11-0. Wayne Hayden, Eric Hungate and David Keith all had two hits for Marion.

At Hot Springs, Covington pitcher Mike Siers allowed only two hits, but shoddy defense gave Bath County (4-0) four runs in a 4-3 victory for the Chargers. Covington (0-2) made four straight errors in the first inning to allow three runs and committed seven miscues on the day. Three of the Cougars' six hits were off the bat of Stuart Nichols.

\ SOFTBALL: At New Castle, Craig County scored four times in the final inning to defeat Covington 11-9. Donna Keffer and Tina Trenor had three hits apiece for the Rockets (1-1). Mary Brewster had three hits and four RBI for Covington (0-1).

In Buchanan, Wendy Cameron scored from second base on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie and keep James River unbeaten with a 7-6 Pioneer District victory over Bath County. Belinda Smith was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Christy Rhodes was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Knights (3-0, 1-0). - Staff report
