SOUTHSIDE CLUB HOLDS MEETING

A discussion on "Historical Trees of Virginia" was presented at the March meeting of the Southside Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs. Lynn Glover. Mrs. Carl Witherspoon was co-hostess.

R.J. Stipes of the plant pathology department at Virginia Tech gave the tree presentation. He said trees that are more than 400 years of age can be found in Monticello, Ashlawn, Mount Vernon and Oakhill, among others.

Winning posters of the "Smokey the Bear" contest were also on display at the meeting.

Club President Anne Cannell suggested that members try new varieties of plants in their gardens this year, including Trivoli, Red Plume Gaillardia and Freckles.

Mrs. Daniel Ludwig, Mrs. R.L. Simpson and Cannell were awarded blue ribbons, and Mrs. Gerald Robinson was awarded a red ribbon for artistic arrangements. Ludwig also received a blue ribbon for a horticulture specimen.
