COUNCIL HONORS CHESS PLAYERS, ATHLETES, BUSINESSES

Pulaski Town Council was in the happy position this week of passing out a lot of accolades. Its four resolutions adopted Tuesday involved two new businesses and honors won by Pulaski County students on both mental and physical levels.

The mental effort came from Pulaski area chess teams at the Chess Federation State Championship Tournament hosted by the county chess association last month.

Claremont Elementary pupils won the state primary championship, with Draper Elementary second and Dublin Elementary third and Critzer and Draper elementaries elementary co-champions. Pulaski Middle School won the junior-high championship and Pulaski County High the high-school championship.

The Pulaski County High's girls' basketball team won athletic recognition. The Lady Cougars finished their 1990-91 season 19-1, winning the Roanoke Valley District Championship and, in post-season play, the Roanoke Valley District Tournament, Northwest Region Tournament and Group AAA Tournament.

They finished as Group AAA State Girls' Basketball runners-up.

Town and county officials had been at a ribbon-cutting to open the new Wal-Mart in Pulaski earlier Tuesday. Council passed a resolution welcoming the new store and the jobs it brings.

Local officials had been assembling almost daily this week, at Wal-Mart Tuesday morning and the inauguration of a countywide 911 communications system Monday.

The final council resolution welcomed the C&P Operator Services Center to Pulaski as one of only seven in Virginia.
