James F. Bostic was traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lane of the divided highway when he ran head on into the van about 10:25 a.m.
He died about 2:05 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
State Trooper George Tsoleas said Bostic might have lived if he had been wearing a seat belt.
Three occupants of the van sustained minor injuries. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
