WOMAN INJURED IN KNIFE ATTACK

A 37-year-old woman suffered cuts to both hands when she wrestled a knife from an assailant Wednesday in the 1900 block of Top Hill Drive Northwest.

The woman, identified by Roanoke police as Jennie M. Acres, was treated at Community Hospital.

She told Roanoke police she had been picked up about 5:15 p.m. near Eighth Street and Church Avenue Southeast by a man who offered to give her a ride.

En route, the man told her he needed to go to an isolated area on Top Hill Drive to use the restroom.

He came back to the car with a knife and tried to stab her, but missed and hit the seat. When he tried to stab her a second time, she grabbed the knife from his hand and fled.

In other reports from area police:

A 39-year-old Vinton man was charged Tuesday with abducting and raping his estranged wife. Roanoke County police said the man forced his way into the woman's car after she arrived at a Starkey Road dental office for an appointment about 10 a.m. The man, who is not being identified to protect his wife's identity, drove her to his house. He was released from Roanoke County Jail on $50,000 bond.

A 55-year-old man was beaten with a stick Tuesday in the 500 block of West Church Avenue. Bowe Schaaf told police a young man approached him about 8:30 p.m. and hit him for no apparent reason. Schaaf was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A Roanoke man was charged with assault and impeding city police Tuesday. Jerry Everett Saunders, 21, of Rolling Hill Avenue, was arrested after police stopped the car in which he was riding on Hunt Avenue about 4:30 p.m. Police said he cursed, kicked and jerked officers while being taken into custody.

A 17-year-old North Roanoke County youth was charged after he apparently took exception to his father's 11 a.m. wake-up call Wednesday. When the father jostled the youth awake, they started arguing and got into a shoving match. The boy went to his car, grabbed a knife and held it to his father's head, Roanoke County police said. The son, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with attempted malicious wounding. He told police he got mad because his father poked him in the ribs.
