GOOD JOBS, CHEAP

I BELIEVE the following job-opportunity announcement, or a very close approximation of it, should be the standard by which the commonwealth advertises its benefits.

Of course, this will be quite some time in the future, when the state looks to replace rather than furlough employees:

COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA/ EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

July 1, 1991

Any Agency iiiiiiiii

Any Location

Any Job Specialty

Apply Anytime

The commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified, experienced, dedicated, hard-working individuals to perform a full range of functions. Independently and professionally conduct tests, prepare reports and explain results to all interested parties.

Qualifications to include all the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the various job functions. Degrees and certification are preferred.

Applicants must submit State Application Form (#14U-14ME) to the Personnel Bureau, Room 123, Richmond, VA 23232.

Selected applicants will have an opportunity to enjoy the following state-employee benefits:

1. Five-percent pay raise. (Three percent in July; hold 2 percent until Dec. 1, then cancel it.)

2. New in-grade step pay increases with 20 steps. (Cancel it.)

3. Cost-of-living raises. (Cancel them.)

4. Health insurance. (Increase coverage rates, lower coverages.)

5. Training. (Sorry, no money in budget for it.)

6. Seminars/conferences. (Employee to pay all costs.)

7. Furlough. (Fifteen days equals 7.5-percent additional pay cut - which you will graciously accept, and during which you will voluntarily continue working.)

THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER AND BELIEVES IN TREATING ALL ITS EMPLOYEES FAIRLY AND EQUALLY.

Richard A. Taylor , a Botetourt County resident, works in Roanoke for the state.
